One of my favorite areas in the Big Bend Ranch State Park is the picnic and campground area called La Cuesta located near “Big Hill”. La Cuesta and Big Hill, one of the tallest points in the area, are located along Highway 170 about half way between Presidio and Terlingua. I like photographing the sunset at La Cuesta standing in the middle of the river to capture the rushing water as well as the setting sun. This is only possible when the river is low. It was marginally low during this attempt. Another six inches lower would be perfect. Of course, a nice cloud bank always adds to the photo.
This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5DS using my Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 Lens set on 16 mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/11, shutter speed at one half of a second and the ISO set at 100. I used a tripod for stability. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.

We love Big Bend. Great Photo. We are off to Montana in a few weeks for the summer.

Thanks Phil! Have fun!
Really nice, Terry. I love how the oncoming water pulls the viewer into the scene.
Thanks Todd!
I’ve stood in m y share of strong flows but never with a nice sunset like you got here. We can’t always have the conditions we desire, but you made the best of it for a nice shot.
Thanks Steve. I keep going back to the same place trying to find the perfect conditions. I’m looking forward to going back to the same spot the next time I’m there.
