One of the highlights of my recent trip to Japan was experiencing the Aomori Nebuta Festival, one of the country’s most spectacular summer celebrations. Each evening, enormous, illuminated floats filled the streets, bringing legends, mythology, and history to life in a dazzling display of color and craftsmanship. This was my favorite Aomori Nebuta Festival Float.
The float in this photograph immediately caught my attention. Swirling clouds frame a brilliant multicolored orb as a fierce warrior reaches forward, clutching a traditional yin-yang symbol. The combination of glowing colors, intricate detail, and dramatic movement creates an almost otherworldly scene. Even standing among thousands of spectators, it was impossible not to be drawn into the story unfolding in light and paper.
What struck me most about the Nebuta Festival was the artistry. Every float is a massive hand-crafted sculpture illuminated from within, transforming the streets of Aomori into an open-air gallery after dark. This image captures a small piece of that magic, a fleeting moment where myth, tradition, and light come together against the night sky.
This image was taken with my Sony A7R V using my Sony FE 24-105 mm f/4 Lens set on 105 mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/4, shutter speed at 1/320th of a second, and ISO set at 1000. I handheld the camera and captured a single image which I processed in Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Topaz Photo to remove the noise and Nik Color Efex 7.
