Great Blue Herons

A pair of Great Blue Herons sitting near a nest at a rookery in the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge located near Rockport, TX. This area was hit hard by Hurricane Harvey and I am delighted that this rookery survived this catastrophic event.

We were able to access this rookery in the middle of the refuge because of the chartered boat we acquired through the Aransas Bay Birding Charters. Captain Kevin piloted The Jack Flash close to the island which houses the rookery. The boat, custom built in Louisiana, is capable of navigating shallow waters and it is capable of coming right up to the shoreline. Anchored there, we were able to use our tripods and long lenses to photograph these amazing birds.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV using a Canon EF 600mm f/4 IS Mark III that I rented from LensRentals. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/8, shutter speed at 1/640th of a second and the ISO set at 200. I used a tripod for stability. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.
