Castle Geyser is located about one thousand yards northeast of Old Faithful. A paved walkway leads directly to this famous geyser. I photographed it early one morning during my recent trip to Yellowstone. I wanted to capture a back-lit image of the eruption. The only problem was that the wind was in my face so I got a nice acid bath trying to take this photo. It took me a while to get the camera and my filter cleaned.
Castle Geyser is a cone geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin of the park. It is noted for the particularly large deposits which form its cone. These deposits have been likened in appearance to a castle. When the geyser was given this name in 1870, the top edges of the structure resembled the typical profile associated with the modern concept of a castle, having the appearance of a large keep, multiple turrets, and especially because the top edges resembled towers. Over time the cone’s shape changes because of the layers of mineral deposited in successive eruptions.
This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV using my Canon EF 16-35 mm f/4 Lens set on 24mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/8, shutter speed at 1/1250th of a second and the ISO set at 100. I used a tripod for stability. This is a single image processed in Lightroom then finalized in Photoshop using Nik Silver Efex Pro.
