Sunrise on Fulton Beach

When I travel to the Rockport, Texas area to photograph birds, I make a point to drive up and down Fulton Beach Road in search of interesting old fishing piers. The constant waves and the occasional hurricanes wreak havoc on the piers making for interesting long-exposure photography candidates. I spotted this interesting old fishing pier during my last trip to the area. The weather was decent for long-exposure photography but the clouds were not remarkable as I was expecting. What was remarkable, was the newly exposed algae. It’s bright green colors made for a good highlight. That was the first time I had seen recently exposed algae in the area. I will now pay more attention to the tide patterns and plan my shots to take advantage of this great scene.

This image was taken with my Sony A7R IV using my Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 Lens set on 21mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/14, shutter speed at 20 seconds, and ISO set at 100. I used a 6-stop Lee filter to extend the exposure time and a Circular Polarizing Filter to minimize the glare on the water. I also used a tripod for stability given the long exposure. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Nik Photo Efex 7.

  1. Beautifully and professionally executed. Horizon is sharply delineated. The circular polarizer and Lee Filter did their job and the foreground makes the image. Minimizing the sky saved the day. Great capture and vision.
