This Prickly Pear flower was also photographed at the Big Bend National Park last spring. I particularly like the prickly pear plants because they are so easy to spot and they often have over a dozen flowers during the blooming season. I spotted this flower while walking around the area called Tuff Canyon. We were looking for specific cactus flowers to photograph in that area when I decided to take this photo. As was the case with the other two photos I posted over the last two days, this photo was taken without the aid of a flash.

Cacti come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Most of them live in habitats subject to drought conditions. Many live in extremely dry environments. Almost all of them are succulents, meaning they have thickened, fleshy parts adapted to store water. Cacti are native to the Americas, ranging from Patagonia in the south to parts of western Canada in the north. There is one species (Rhipsalis baccifera) which also grows in Africa and Sri Lanka.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="8859" data-permalink="https://tkahler.com/blog/2016/07/prickly-pear-flower/attachment/8859/" data-orig-file="https://tkahler.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/20160416-bbnp-flowers-104-edit.jpg" data-orig-size="1500,1500" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"11","credit":"Terry B.
