{"id":8851,"date":"2016-07-18T04:00:58","date_gmt":"2016-07-18T09:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/?p=8851"},"modified":"2023-04-06T19:53:58","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T00:53:58","slug":"strawberry-hedgehog-cactus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/2016\/07\/strawberry-hedgehog-cactus\/","title":{"rendered":"Strawberry Hedgehog Cactus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The photograph below is of a Strawberry Hedgehog Cactus taken during a hike on the Contrabando Trail at\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/tpwd.texas.gov\/state-parks\/big-bend-ranch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Bend State Park<\/a> during my visit to the area\u00a0last spring. I decided to hike the trail one day while some of my colleagues went off and did other things. The park has 238 miles of trails and many of them offer great access to Texas Wildflowers, especially during the spring. I mentioned in a post earlier this year that the rainfall last\u00a0spring was minimal and that I was going to focus mostly on photographing flowering cacti. The Strawberry Hedgehog Cactus is one of my favorite cactus flowers. One has to be careful when photographing these plants. I recall backing into another cactus plant while taking this photo. Not a pleasant experience.<\/p>\n<p>The Big Bend State Park is adjacent to\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/bibe\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Bend National Park<\/a>. The\u00a0state park&#8217;s\u00a0website has the tagline &#8220;Welcome to the Other Side of Nowhere!&#8221; That statement is true for that part of Texas but it&#8217;s definitely true for the park. The park does have\u00a0quite a few interesting activities including hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, horse rides and general exploring using two and four-wheel drive vehicles. It is by far Texas&#8217; biggest park. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f\/6.3, shutter speed at 1\/500th of a second and the ISO set at 100. I did not use a flash to light the subject.
