It is also the last image captured with my old\u00a0friend, my Canon 70-200mm f\/2.8 lens. I purchased this lens in 1996\u00a0when it was state of the art.\u00a0Technology has changed significantly over the last 20 years. The new lenses have better glass coatings, image stabilization and faster focus technology. I recently sold this lens and purchased the latest version. The new one\u00a0has improved glass coatings and it has the latest image stabilization technology. I am looking forward to using it. For now it&#8217;s goodbye old friend.<\/p>\n<p>There are five things that I consider when buying a new lens. First, <strong>focal length<\/strong>. I determine what I am going to photograph and how far away the subject will be. I then look at options for the right focal length that meets the need. Second, I look for the right <strong>aperture configuration<\/strong>. Large aperture lenses (e.g. f\/2.8) are more expensive but they offer more options for great <a href=\"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/glossary\/bokeh\/\">bokeh<\/a>. Third is <strong>image stabilization<\/strong>. This is especially important in longer lenses (e.g. 200mm). Fourth, <strong>specialty lenses<\/strong>. These are lenses made for very specific applications (e.g. macro photography or portrait photography). Lastly, <strong>price<\/strong>. Of course, we all have to pay for our expensive hobby so price plays a very important role in my decision. \u00a0In all cases, it is a good idea to consult a professional that uses your camera brand. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f\/2.8, shutter speed at 1\/5th of a second and the ISO set at 100. This is a series of 9\u00a0images stitched together in Lightroom. Final processing was done in Photoshop and Nik Color Efex Pro.<\/p>\n<p>This image is best viewed large. Click on the image to enlarge it.
