I was going\u00a0through the\u00a0remaining wildlife photos from my recent trip to South Africa when I came across this male Nyala<\/a>. I posted a photograph of a Nyala<\/a> last month which I misidentified. It was actually a Kudu<\/a>. The two species are hard to tell apart. Here are some tips in case you find yourself in a photo safari in the southern region of Africa.<\/p>\n

A Nyala ram is shorter and darker than the Kudu. Both animals have a shag and hump, but the Nyala\u2019s hump is smaller and the stripes more pronounced against the darker, longer, coat. The male Nyala’s horns make one tight twist then grow straight up (as in the photo below).\u00a0The Kudu\u2019s horns make a corkscrew spiral and then adds additional spirals with age.<\/p>\n

This image was taken with my\u00a0Canon EOS 5DS<\/a>\u00a0using my\u00a0Canon EF 100-400mm f\/4.5-5.6 II Lens<\/a>\u00a0set on 278mm. The camera was set on\u00a0Manual\u00a0mode with the aperture set at f\/8, shutter speed at 1\/500th of a second and the ISO set at 1600. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and Nik Color Efex Pro.<\/p>\n
