Around our house, that includes little bright green lizards called Carolina Anoles or Red-throated Anoles. Their toes have adhesive pads that help them climb just about any object or wall. They torment the dogs and cats by staying just out of reach. I photographed this Anole on the patio while he was trying to get some warmth from the early morning sun. He’s sitting on one of the lime trees.

Males are typically about fifteen percent larger and their throat fan (dewlap) is three times larger than female’s. The males have a red dewlap and the female’s is white. They are very territorial and will protect their turf. Some people have witnessed males fighting their own reflections in mired glass. He will fight other males to defend his territory. Upon sighting another male, he will extend his dewlap and bob his head repeatedly in an attempt to chase the rival away. I have actually seen two of these lizards go at it on the fence rail. Very comical to watch.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="7598" data-permalink="https://tkahler.com/blog/2016/04/bright-green/red-throated-anole/" data-orig-file="https://tkahler.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/20160423-Lizard-026.jpg" data-orig-size="1500,1500" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"9","credit":"Terry B.
