{"id":6694,"date":"2016-02-23T04:00:50","date_gmt":"2016-02-23T10:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/?p=6694"},"modified":"2023-04-06T15:35:16","modified_gmt":"2023-04-06T20:35:16","slug":"egret-at-sunrise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/egret-at-sunrise\/","title":{"rendered":"Egret at Sunrise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The early morning charter boat ride out to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fws.gov\/refuge\/aransas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aransas National Wildlife Refuge<\/a> last week\u00a0to photograph birds in the wild was one of my favorite parts of the day. The serenity and spectacular sunrise made for a great beginning.\u00a0I photographed\u00a0this Great Egret at Sunrise during our first morning on the Refuge. Like us, the\u00a0Egret was starting its morning and took off into the bright orange sunrise. The sight was amazing.<\/p>\n<p>The colors emitted by sunrises and sunsets are key elements of great photographs but many people don&#8217;t understand why the colors\u00a0are so vibrant. These colors are a result of a phenomenon called scattering. Molecules and small particles in the atmosphere change the direction of light, causing it to scatter. Scattering affects the color of light coming from the sky, but the details are determined by the wavelength of the light and the size of the particle.\u00a0Because the sun is low on the horizon, sunlight passes through more air at sunset and sunrise than during the day. More atmosphere means more molecules to scatter.\u00a0Also, different kinds of particles (e.g. dust, water droplets, smoke, etc.) scatter light in different ways so you may get different colors due to particle makeup.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/20160216-Aransas-Wildlife-Refuge-0063.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6617\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"6617\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/egret-at-sunrise\/sunrise-colors-with-egret\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/20160216-Aransas-Wildlife-Refuge-0063.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1500,1000\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;6.3&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Terry B. The camera was set on <a href=\"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/glossary\/aperture-priority\/\">Aperture priority<\/a> mode with the aperture set at f\/6.3, shutter speed at 1\/1600th of a second and the ISO set at 400.
