This is another image from my trip to Rockport, TX to photograph birds in\u00a0the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge<\/a>. In the evenings, we focused on photographing landscapes. The image of The Photographer<\/a>\u00a0that I posted last week was taken during the first evening in Rockport. The image below of the airplane on approach was taken a few minutes before.<\/p>\n

The plane in the image is used to train pilots who practice touch-and-go landings. Some of the locals say that the facility is used to train\u00a0United States Air Force pilots. The pilots in training must conduct “touch-and-go” landings in the dark in order to obtain their pilot’s license. Dark, however, is defined as 30 minutes before sunset and 30 minutes after sunrise. So, if you show up just at the right time you can get a sunset image with the plane on approach. This was the case for this image but I would have liked it if the pilot scheduled his landing about 10 minutes later so the sun could have been on the horizon…<\/p>\n

One thing about this image is that it has what are\u00a0called “leading lines”.\u00a0A leading line paves an easy path for the eye to follow through different elements of a photo. Usually they start at the bottom of the frame and guide the eye upwards and inwards, from the foreground of the image to the background, typically leading toward the main subject. In this photo, the leading line is the beach that starts on the lower-left corner and then arcs towards the two main subjects, the sun and the plane. So, think about “leading lines” the next time you are out photographing subjects.<\/p>\n

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5DS<\/a> using my Canon EF 16-35mm f\/4 Lens<\/a> set on 16 mm. The camera was set on Aperture priority<\/a> mode with the aperture set at f\/8, shutter speed at 1\/1000th of a second and the ISO set at 100. This was a single image processed in Lightroom and Nik Color Efex Pro.<\/p>\n
