I often watch them from my office and I&#8217;m amazed how fast they can go up and down trees and how much fun they seem to have doing that. \u00a0They have skills that I wish I had&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Squirrels are particularly adept at climbing trees. They have very sharp claws and instead of backward pointing toes they swivel their entire foot around at the ankle so that it points backwards. With this, the squirrel can hang almost vertical provided that there is enough irregularity in the object into which to hook its little claws.<\/p>\n<p>This was the case when I visited the <a href=\"http:\/\/tpwd.texas.gov\/state-parks\/pedernales-falls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pedernales Falls State Park<\/a> last week and captured this <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fox_squirrel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox Squirrel<\/a> hanging upside down on a tree stump attempting to steal some of the bird seed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5914\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5914\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160107-Pedernales-Falls-Birding-102.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5914\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"5914\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/2016\/01\/upside-down\/fox-squirrel-upsidedown\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160107-Pedernales-Falls-Birding-102.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1000,1500\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;6.3&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Terry B. The camera was set on <a href=\"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/glossary\/aperture-priority\/\">Aperture priority<\/a> mode with the aperture set at f\/6.3, shutter speed at 1\/160 and the ISO set at 1600.
