{"id":5472,"date":"2015-12-14T04:00:52","date_gmt":"2015-12-14T10:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/?p=5472"},"modified":"2023-04-06T15:49:08","modified_gmt":"2023-04-06T20:49:08","slug":"wet-jay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/2015\/12\/wet-jay\/","title":{"rendered":"Wet Jay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I went back to the bird blind at the Pedernales Falls State Park\u00a0last week and noticed this very nice Western Scrub Jay bathing in the pond at the bird blind. \u00a0He then stepped out of the pond and was looking around when I captured this image.<\/p>\n<p>When birds bathe in water or saturate themselves with dust they are actively maintaining their plumage. In well-watered areas bathing is most common, in arid ones dusting is more often observed. Frequent dusting helps to maintain an optimum amount of oil on the feathers.
