Continuing my series of images of birds photographed at Pedernales Falls State Park<\/a> bird blind. This image is of a female Northern Cardinal. \u00a0I called her Lady\u00a0Cardinal. She’s not as colorful as her male counterpart (see post on Cardinals<\/a>) but she’s still a very attractive bird.<\/p>\n

Only a few female North American songbirds sing, but the female Northern Cardinal does, and often while sitting on the nest. This may give the male information about when to bring food to the nest. A mated pair shares song phrases, but the female may sing a longer and slightly more complex song than the male. I’m glad that as humans we don’t have to do this…<\/p>\n

Northern Cardinal – Pedernales Falls SP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark III<\/a> using my Sigma 150-600mm f\/5-6.3 Sports Lens<\/a>\u00a0set on 470 mm. The camera was set on Aperture priority<\/a> mode with the aperture set at f\/8, shutter speed at 1\/400th of a second and the ISO set at 3200. I had to use the higher ISO to achieve a fast enough shutter speed to photograph the bird perfectly still.<\/p>\n
