{"id":2601,"date":"2015-08-19T04:00:31","date_gmt":"2015-08-19T09:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/?p=2601"},"modified":"2020-12-22T13:57:57","modified_gmt":"2020-12-22T19:57:57","slug":"im-no-ansel-adams-but","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/im-no-ansel-adams-but\/","title":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m No Ansel Adams, but&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230; I did take a photograph from the same area\u00a0as he did and we\u00a0share a love for photographing the American West.<\/p>\n<p>In 1941 the United States National Park Service\u00a0commissioned <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ansel_Adams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ansel Adams<\/a> to create a photo mural for the Department of the Interior building in Washington, DC. \u00a0The project was halted due to WW II and never resumed. The holdings of the National Archives Still Picture Branch include 226 photographs taken for this project, most of them signed and captioned by Adams. One of these photographs was of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/cach\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canyon de Chelly National Monuments<\/a>, a photograph he titled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.anseladams.com\/white-house-ruin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White House Ruin<\/a>&#8220;. \u00a0This area is owned by the Navajo Indians and its access is restricted.<\/p>\n<p>In the summer of 1999 I befriended a Navajo gentleman that I met one day on the side of the road. \u00a0He was selling his paintings and I asked him if he would trade paintings for photographs. \u00a0He laughed and said that his paintings were worth more than my photographs. Then, he paused and told me that he\u00a0did have a need for a photographer. As it turns out, he was a\u00a0coach for the Navajo Boxing Team and they were in need of\u00a0photographs of one of their star boxers. The kid happened to be the son of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russell_Means\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russell Means<\/a>, a famous Navajo actor. \u00a0So, I shot the tournament at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_McDowell,_Arizona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fort\u00a0McDowell<\/a>, AZ a couple of weeks later. \u00a0One thing led to another and one day he asked me if I would be interested in shooting &#8220;White House Ruin&#8221;. \u00a0How could I turn that down!
