{"id":2283,"date":"2015-08-13T04:00:48","date_gmt":"2015-08-13T09:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/?p=2283"},"modified":"2017-03-27T09:27:12","modified_gmt":"2017-03-27T14:27:12","slug":"how-to-panoramas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/how-to-panoramas\/","title":{"rendered":"How To: Panoramas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I love taking panoramas. \u00a0It&#8217;s one of my favorite things to do. \u00a0It fulfills an artistic and technical need, and, the results are great to look at. \u00a0The panorama of\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pennybacker_Bridge\" target=\"_blank\">Pennybacker Bridge<\/a> (aka &#8220;360 Bridge&#8221;) in\u00a0Austin is made up of 8 single frame images. \u00a0Each &#8220;slice&#8221; overlaps the other making it possible for software to recognize the overlapping features and assemble\u00a0the panorama. \u00a0For this particular image I used Photoshop&#8217;s panorama feature\u00a0to assemble the final image. Kahler&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;Austin 360 Bridge Panorama&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Austin 360 Bridge Panorama\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150227-Austin-360-Bridge-AB-3-Creative-750x103.jpg\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150227-Austin-360-Bridge-AB-3-Creative.jpg\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1248\" src=\"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150227-Austin-360-Bridge-AB-3-Creative.jpg\" alt=\"Austin 360 Bridge Panorama\" width=\"1500\" height=\"371\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many of today&#8217;s modern cameras and smartphone cameras have a &#8220;Panorama&#8221; function built in, however, photographers would like to have more control over this process and the outcome. \u00a0I&#8217;ve shot quite a few panoramas recently and I thought it would be a good idea to share some of the tips I&#8217;ve learned along the way.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tripod<\/strong>: \u00a0A heavy-duty tripod is the foundation of a good photograph and it is a must when shooting panoramas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Panorama Head<\/strong>: \u00a0Shooting panoramas with a standard tripod head is very hard to do. \u00a0A\u00a0panorama head on your tripod is a big plus. \u00a0A panorama head has a leveling eye and rotates above the tripod leveling so that the rotation is level notwithstanding an unleveled tripod.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Portrait Orientation<\/strong>: \u00a0Many people shoot panoramas in landscape mode and end up with a very thin strip. Turn your camera to portrait mode and you&#8217;ll have a taller panorama.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lens<\/strong>: \u00a0I prefer to use a medium range lens for these type of shots. \u00a0I find that somewhere between 70mm and 200mm is a good focal distance. \u00a0It just depends on how far your subject is.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Metering<\/strong>: \u00a0Once you&#8217;ve got your camera set up, meter the entire scene and find a good exposure balance then set your camera on manual mode and key in the appropriate settings (aperture, shutter speed &amp; ISO). \u00a0Also, make sure the white balance is set to something other than Auto so that it&#8217;s consistent across all the images.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Overlap<\/strong>: \u00a0I use a 50% overlap\u00a0when I&#8217;m shooting. \u00a0This gives the software more data from which to decipher the stitching process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remote<\/strong>: \u00a0I always use a wired or wireless remote to trigger the shutter. \u00a0It eliminates any unnecessary camera shake and you get sharper images.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dry Run<\/strong>: \u00a0I highly recommend doing a dry run or two before shooting the actual sequence. \u00a0I look for things like where the tripod legs are, where is my backpack, are there any objects that I might trip over, etc. This is especially true on any panorama over 180 degrees and especially so on 360 degree panoramas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shooting<\/strong>: \u00a0Create a good workflow for shooting using the tips above. \u00a0I find that shooting in a good rhythm helps.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Advanced Panoramas<\/strong>:\u00a0Shooting an image with bright objects\u00a0(e.g. sunrise or sunset) is quite tricky. I try to find the best exposure balance. You will have some parts of the image over exposed while others will be significantly under exposed. I fix these in post processing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tricky Situations<\/strong>: Avoid panoramas with moving objects (e.g. surf). \u00a0I tried to do an ocean panorama once and failed miserably. \u00a0The incoming waves were at different intervals in each frame so it did not look very good when assembled.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Parallax Error<\/strong>. \u00a0This is an issue that happens when there is something that&#8217;s too close to the camera.\u00a0 As your rotate the camera around the software gets confused and creates a distortion in your final image.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Post Processing<\/strong>: I use Photoshop to assemble my final image and do my edits. \u00a0There are other options to assemble the final image including Panorama Maker and the latest version of Lightroom (v6). \u00a0All three of these do a decent job and none are perfect. \u00a0I find that Photoshop does a better job overall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I hope you find these tips helpful. \u00a0I may have left out a thing or two. \u00a0Use the comment section below to add any other tips you can think of.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How To: Panoramas:  I love taking panoramas.
