{"id":2130,"date":"2015-08-10T04:00:29","date_gmt":"2015-08-10T09:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/?p=2130"},"modified":"2023-04-03T20:14:10","modified_gmt":"2023-04-04T01:14:10","slug":"big-bend-night-sky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/big-bend-night-sky\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Bend Night Sky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/bibe\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Bend National Park<\/a> is located in the Southwest part of Texas and is one of the most popular places to visit in the state. From the desert floor to the pine-covered mountains, Big Bend has a lot to offer, especially during the spring. I was invited to travel to the park by some of my photography friends in the spring of 2015. Every hour of the day was spent either taking photographs or planning our next photography event. Most every day began at 3:00AM with a night shoot of the Milky Way, followed by a sunrise shoot, then capturing images of native Texas Wildflowers, then scouting for the evening shoot and for the following morning and ending with dinner and a sunset shoot. Most of this required a fair amount of hiking as well. This was not only fun but challenging.<\/p>\n<p>One of the highlights of the trip was the early morning Big Bend night sky shots of the Milky Way. \u00a0The conditions were not ideal every morning and we were only able to obtain decent results\u00a0twice. \u00a0The first time was near the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/bibe\/learn\/historyculture\/castolon.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Castolon area<\/a>\u00a0which is on the way to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/bibe\/planyourvisit\/secyn.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santa Elena Canyon<\/a>. \u00a0It was my first Milky Way shooting experience so I made a lot of mistakes early on. \u00a0Then, it all came together with this image. The trick (beyond the right gear and all the pre-shooting research) is to apply <span class=\"wp-glossary wpg-tooltip\" data-termid=\"2135\" data-content=\"excerpt\" data-qtipstyle=\"tipsy\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/glossary\/the-500-rule\/\"  title=\"The 500 Rule\">The 500 Rule<\/a><\/span>, as it&#8217;s called. \u00a0The purpose behind the rule is to avoid star trails. \u00a0In addition to this rule, you must set your ISO to something above 1600. \u00a0Different cameras react differently to ISO settings so you have to do some tests to see what works best. \u00a0Lastly, you must focus manually and use live view to double-check the focus and mirror lock-up to avoid camera shake. \u00a0Overall I was pleased with my first encounter with the Milky Way.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2125\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2125\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/20150415-Big-Bend-NP-Castelon-Night-Sky-AA061-2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"2125\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/big-bend-night-sky\/big-bend-np-castelon-night-sky\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/20150415-Big-Bend-NP-Castelon-Night-Sky-AA061-2.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1000,1500\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;2.8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Terry B. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f\/2.8, shutter speed at 20 seconds and the ISO set at 2500. <span class=\"wp-glossary wpg-tooltip\" data-termid=\"2276\" data-content=\"excerpt\" data-qtipstyle=\"tipsy\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/glossary\/mirror-lock-up\/\"  title=\"Mirror Lock-Up\">Mirror Lock-Up<\/a><\/span> was engaged before the shooting began. Post-processing was mostly done in Lightroom with some work done in Photoshop.
