While there I attended the Nebuta festival. If you happen to visit Japan during the summer, I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary. The festival atmosphere is amazing. It’s easy to become captivated by the enormous, illuminated floats, the rhythmic drums, and the energy of the crowds. Yet, as I discovered on the evening, some of the most meaningful moments of travel happen away from the spotlight.

After experiencing the festival, and during the return to the ship, I came across a small Buddhist shrine filled with softly glowing lanterns and a row of Jizō statues adorned with colorful flowers and offerings. The small girl positioned in front of the shrine, perhaps saying a prayer, made me stop and capture the moment. The contrast between the vibrant festival atmosphere and this intimate moment of reflection created a powerful image. The child seemed drawn to the warm glow of the lanterns, while the shrine itself offered a sense of calm amid the celebration.

The statues depicted here are believed to represent Jizō Bosatsu, one of the most beloved figures in Japanese Buddhism. Jizō is traditionally viewed as a protector of travelers and children, making the scene even more poignant. The colorful flowers, lanterns, and Buddhist banners transform what might otherwise be a simple street-side shrine into a place of remembrance, gratitude, and spiritual connection.

Sometimes the grandest experiences of travel are not found in the main attractions, but in the small, human moments that unfold when we take the time to look beyond them. This scene served as a reminder that even in the midst of celebration, there is always space for contemplation and connection.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1000" height="1500" data-attachment-id="21146" data-permalink="https://tkahler.com/blog/aomori-shrine/" data-orig-file="https://tkahler.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/20260805-aomori-nebuta-festival-085-edit.jpg" data-orig-size="1000,1500" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"4","credit":"Terry B.
