It was along this hike that the group spotted a Woodland Pinedrops (Pterospora andromedea Nutt.). Nobody in our group, including the guide, knew what the plant was. So, I “phoned a friend” to find out. Specifically, I texted my friend Tom who knew exactly what it was. Thanks!

For those of you who are not familiar with the plant, Pinedrops is a root parasite, that depends on its association with a fungus that is also associated with a pine tree. Pinedrops produces very little chlorophyll and is therefore not green in color and does not conduct photosynthesis.

<img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="18406" data-permalink="https://tkahler.com/blog/woodpland-pinedrops/" data-orig-file="https://tkahler.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/20220127-yellowstone-np-snowshoe-tour-016-edit-e1643927145867.jpg" data-orig-size="1000,1500" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"8","credit":"Terry B.
