I was walking around photographing some of the features in the Upper Geyser Basin waiting for Old Faithful to erupt. I wanted to photograph the geyser from afar. I was fortunate to see it erupt while I was in a good location. I decided to use a Low Key processing technique to highlight the contrast offered by the back-lit steam column. By the way, whoever decided to put a big building right next to Old Faithful was not thinking about photographers&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Old Faithful was named by the first official expedition to Yellowstone, the Washburn Expedition of 1870. They were impressed by its size and frequency. Old Faithful erupts every 35 to 120 minutes for 1 1\/2 to 5 minutes. Its maximum height ranges from 90 to 184 feet.\u00a0It is not the biggest or the most regular geyser in Yellowstone but it is the biggest regular geyser.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13840\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13840\" style=\"width: 1125px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180206-old-faithful-001-edit.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"13840\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/old-faithful-eruption\/old-faithful-eruption-2\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180206-old-faithful-001-edit.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1125,1500\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;5.6&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Terry B. The camera was set on Aperture Priority\u00a0mode with the aperture set at f\/5.6, shutter speed at 1\/8000th of a second and the ISO set at 400.\u00a0I hand-held the camera for this image.
