The Midway Geyser Basin is one of my favorite areas within the Yellowstone National Park. It is home to the Grand Prismatic Spring, Turquoise Pool, the Excelsior Geyser Crater and the Opal Pool. It houses some of the most colorful features in the entire park. I like looking at the overhead views of the area. Click here<\/a> to see how it looks in Google Maps.<\/p>\n

The Opal Pool is a hot spring with an approximate temperature of 132 \u00b0F (56 \u00b0C). Though usually active as a hot spring, Opal Pool is considered a fountain-type geyser. The first recorded eruption of Opal Pool was in 1947 and it occurred infrequently until they stopped in 1953. The eruptions reemerged in 1979 and it erupted infrequently, and without much warning. In 2005 Opal completely drained, but refilled as a vivid blue-green pool in 2008.<\/p>\n

This image was taken with my\u00a0Canon EOS 5D Mark IV<\/a>\u00a0using my\u00a0Canon EF 16-35mm f\/4 Lens<\/a>\u00a0set on 16mm. The camera was set on Manual\u00a0mode with the aperture set at f\/13, shutter speed at 1\/100th of a second and the ISO set at 100. I used a tripod for stability. This is a series of five images merged together in Lightroom using the Panorama feature and then finalized in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.<\/p>\n
