I captured this photograph of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone during my recent trip to Yellowstone National Park. The photography group I was with stopped at Artist Point to photograph the famous Yellowstone Falls. Some of the more popular observation areas were closed due to deep snow so we had to settle for a lower observation location. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is the first large canyon on the Yellowstone River downstream from Yellowstone Falls (seen in the background). It was difficult to photograph the falls due to the falling snow so I focused more on the wider scene.The specifics of the geology of the canyon are not well understood, except that it is an erosional feature rather than the result of glaciation. The “V-type” shape of the canyon is further proof of erosion. The colors of the canyon (which are hard to see due to the snowfall) are a result of different iron compounds which are rusting.<\/p>\n

This image was captured with my\u00a0Canon EOS 5D Mark IV<\/a>\u00a0using my\u00a0Canon EF 24-70mm f\/2.8 Lens<\/a>\u00a0set on 24mm. The camera was set on Manual\u00a0mode with the aperture set at f\/14, shutter speed at 1\/400th of a second and the ISO set at 400. I used a tripod for stability and my Kirk rail to avoid Parallax issues. This is a series of five images brought together in Lightroom using the Panorama Merge feature then finalized in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.<\/p>\n
