I am hoping to photograph it again during my upcoming trip to the park. The spring is one of my favorite features in the park.

Old Faithful may be more famous, but the Grand Prismatic Spring is the most photographed thermal feature in Yellowstone. That’s because of its bright colors and enormous size. It is hard to see from this photograph but the colors in the center of the spring are magnificent. The spring is the third largest spring in the world. It is bigger than a football field at 370 feet in diameter. The hot spring has bright bands of orange, yellow, and green. The bands surround the deep blue waters in the spring. The multicolored layers get their hues from different species of thermophile (heat-loving) bacteria living in the progressively cooler water around the spring. It’s a must-see when visiting the park.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="13497" data-permalink="https://tkahler.com/blog/2018/01/the-grand-prismatic-spring/grand-prismatic-spring-3/" data-orig-file="https://tkahler.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/20160923-grand-prismatic-spring-at01-edit-e1517347610754.jpg" data-orig-size="1500,1000" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"9","credit":"Terry B.
