I was out scouting locations to photograph Texas wildflowers when I found a very long barbed wire fence with the boots on every fence post. I was curious why they did this and I came up with a few answers. First, cowboys wear boots and the boots wear out. So, being resourceful beings, they put them on fence posts to prevent rain water from seeping into the posts and rotting the out. Also, I found out that sometimes a rancher will put boots on the fence post to honor the passing of a beloved horse, a hired hand or a fallen comrade. In the old days, a rancher would indicate he was home and the workday over by hanging boots on the fence.<\/p>\n<p>So, don&#8217;t toss those old boots. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f\/8, shutter speed at 1\/320th of a second and the ISO set at 250. I hand-held the camera for all five images. This is a series of five images processed initially in Lightroom and then ported to Photoshop to assemble the pentaptych. Assembling the pentaptych was a challenge as I had to line up the barbed wire\u00a0 to maintain continuity between the photos.<\/p>\n<p>This image is best viewed large.
