I&#8217;m heading home today and I look forward to processing the photographs I captured. I will post them in the days ahead. The photo below of the Big Dipper over Gold Point was taken from a hilltop overlooking the old mining ghost town. The Big Dipper was very clear from that vantage point. You can see it over the Joshua Tree and then over the left side of the city. Our accommodations were &#8220;very rustic,&#8221; but we had a great time photographing the various structures in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The area that would become Gold Point, Nevada was first settled by ranchers and a few miners during the 1880&#8217;s. It was first named Hornsilver due to the deposits of silver found in 1902.\u00a0When new discoveries of gold and silver established the major Nevada mining towns of Tonopah and Goldfield in the early 1900s, the town of Gold Point was overrun by prospectors. Gold was discovered in 1905, and the town was eventually renamed Gold Point. A post office was established in 1908, and residents organized a chamber of commerce and numerous businesses and saloons sprouted up. The camera was set on\u00a0Manual mode with the aperture set at f\/4, shutter speed at 20 seconds and the ISO set at 4000. I used a tripod for this photo. I lit the Joshua Tree with my Coast HP7R with some custom filters.
