I spent quite a bit of my life in the desert, in fact, quite a bit of time in the Chihuahuan desert. This is the same desert that encompasses the Big Bend area, including the National Park and the State Park. The desert can be a very inhospitable place. Every time I travel there I marvel at how the plants and animals manage to survive and thrive. There are some, like this lone tree, that struggle. Our group was out photographing flowers in the Agua Fria area when we ran across this tree and we decided to photograph it. It’s not the most artistic photograph but it is representative of the area. The ground there was made of shale and I found many fossils. What a great place to explore. I plan on returning to the area the next time I travel to Big Bend.<\/p>\n

This image was taken with my\u00a0Canon EOS 5DS<\/a>\u00a0using my\u00a0Canon EF 100mm f\/2.8L Macro Lens<\/a>. The camera was set on Manual\u00a0mode with the aperture set at f\/8, shutter speed at 1\/640th of a second and the ISO set at 100. I used a tripod for stability. This is a single image processed in Lightroom then finalized in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.<\/p>\n
