The better photograph was from the other side but we were not allowed to go past the barrier. This is the case with most of Yellowstone National Park. The barriers don&#8217;t really physically keep you from getting closer to the features but it is clearly noted that people are not allowed to go beyond them.<\/p>\n<p>Orange Spring Mound is located in the Mammoth Hot Springs formations\u00a0and is part of the Lower Terraces area. It measures 48 feet long and 20 feet wide. The mound is named for its color, which is created by cyanobacteria and algae, and shape, which is a result of very slow water flow and mineral deposition. The temperature of the spring is about 157 degrees, making it one of the cooler thermal features at Mammoth Terraces.\u00a0The brilliant color changes from season to season depending on the flow rate and the amount of available sunlight.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11168\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11168\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/20160920-mammoth-hot-springs-cb1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"11168\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/orange-spring-mound\/orange-spring-mound-2\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/20160920-mammoth-hot-springs-cb1.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1000,1500\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;16&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Terry B. The camera was set on Aperture priority mode with the aperture set at f\/16, shutter speed at 1\/125th of a second and the ISO set at 100.
