I wrote about this trail earlier this year in a post titled <a href=\"http:\/\/tkahler.com\/blog\/2016\/04\/chimneys\/\">Chimneys<\/a>. I hiked up one of the chimneys after completing the sunrise photographs but I did so without my camera. I discovered a hole left in the lava column and I decided to take this photograph with my iPhone so that I could return some day and photograph it using my good gear. I ran across the\u00a0photograph as I was going through my Big Bend portfolio in preparation for my trip this fall to the park. I decided to post it even though it is a low resolution photograph.<\/p>\n<p>The Chimneys, as they are called, are a series of\u00a0volcanic dike formations. Dikes are formed when hot magma rises through cracks in the earth\u2019s crust. The dikes cool and are eroded by the elements. The window you see in the image below is part of\u00a0the remnants of surge deposits from an\u00a0eruption which took place a very, very long time ago.
