Eryngo

I made a trip to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center last week to photograph some of the large numbers of Texas Wildflowers that bloom this time of year. I recently noticed an Eryngo plant growing near the Center’s courtyard and I have been visualizing this image for a couple of weeks, so, I decided to go ahead and photograph it.

Growing throughout most to Texas, Eryngo (Eryngium leavenworthii) is one of the more interesting but seldom seen plants in the state. It blooms in late summer and early autumn. They look like miniature purple pineapples. Many people think the plant is a thistle but in fact, it’s a member of the carrot family. It is also known as False Purple Thistle. Thistle or not, touching it is not a good idea. I accidentally touched one and it was not a pleasant experience…

This image was taken with my Sony A7R II Digital Camera using my Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro Lens. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/4.5, shutter speed at 1/160th of a second and the ISO set at 100. I used only natural light to light the subject. I captured a total of ten photographs (one for each flower) and brought them together in Photoshop. I finished the image in Lightroom and Nik Color Efex Pro.
