Sand Palafox

I captured this photograph of the Sand Palafox (Palafoxia hookeriana) flower during my last trip to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. There was an area where the flower was blooming in large numbers and I stopped there on my way out of the Center to photograph it. I shielded the plant with one of my 14″ Diffuser disks in order to avoid the stark contrast and to be able to show more of the detail without casting shadows. This also gave me better separation between the foreground and background.

I really like this flower and in particular its color. I’m not alone as bees, butterflies and birds equally adore this plant. I find that the hairs that cover the branches and leaves are quite interesting as well.

This image was taken with my Sony A7R II Digital Camera using my Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro Lens. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/8, shutter speed at 1/400th of a second and the ISO set at 400. I used only natural light to light the subject. I used the Kirk FR-2 Focusing Rail to capture 8 photographs and brought them together into one image using Photoshop and the Focus Stacking technique. I finished the image in Lightroom and Nik Color Efex Pro.
