The Mealy Blue Sage is an excellent plant for a flower bed, and is often planted in groupings to create an attractive mass of color. It is also a good plant for a rock garden.
The American Basket Flower (Centaurea americana), is native to south-central United States and northeastern Mexico. I understand that this is a very easy plant to grow and that it requires little maintenance.

It is time for my spring trip to Big Bend National Park in west Texas. One of the first events was the hike up Grapevine Hills Trail to photograph a Balanced Rock Panorama.
It is Texas Bluebonnet Time in Central Texas and especially out at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. I was impressed by the quantity and quality of the bluebonnets at the Center this year.
I finally made it out to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center to photograph some of the wonderful Texas Wildflowers. I was making my way around the grounds when I came across this Eastern Purple Coneflower with dewdrops on its petals.
I photographed this howling coyote near sunset lake in the Biscuit and Black Sand Basins of Yellowstone National Park.I heard him howling but I could not spot him. He finally came out in a clearing and I was able to capture a few photos of him in action.
Castle Geyser is located about one thousand yards northeast of Old Faithful. A paved walkway leads directly to this famous geyser. I photographed it early one morning during my trip to Yellowstone.
Springtime is by far my favorite time of year, especially here in Texas. The temperatures are pleasant, the flowers start blooming and the songbirds are a plenty. Eastern Phoebes are perennial around our property and I’m always excited to see them milling about.

Valentia Island is a great place to visit. The Valentia Lighthouse is maintained by the Commissioners of Irish Lights. The lighthouse light guides vessels from the sea and leads them through the northern entrance of Valentia Harbor past Harbor Rock.
Spring is moving along much faster than I expected. Wildflowers are springing up everywhere! I decided that I better get outside and make sure I still remember how to photograph Texas Wildflowers. This pair of Prairie Fleabane flowers were ideal to photograph.

Our photography workshop group searched for a “Lone Tree” the entire time we were in Yellowstone National Park. We finally found one on the last day. This tree is located near Soda Butte along highway 212 in the north side of the park.

One of the great things about my trip to South Africa were the beautiful sunrises. It was great to wake up to nice color pallet of red, yellow and orange.
One of the more prolific animals in South Africa has to be the Baboon (Papio). I saw Baboons in almost every location that I visited.
I was impressed by the number of parasites on the wildlife during my trip to South Africa. The Red-billed Oxpecker helped rid these parasites from their host.
One of the common animals we saw during the photo safaris was the Zebra. Specifically these were Plains Zebras which differ slightly from Mountain Zebras.
Two things that were very common at the Safari Lodge that I stayed at were Nyalas and Aloe plants. Nyalas came into the lodge compound frequently during my stay.
Our guide tried to find the elusive Black Rhinoceros during our last safari. Unfortunately he proved to be elusive but we fond a Vervet Monkey in a tree.
After capturing the photo from yesterday’s post, I moved closer to capture a closeup of the Blue Gum Tree tree rows, the remaining sunset and the stormy clouds.
Upon arrival to our final destination in South Africa, we could not help but notice the miles of Blue Gum Tree plantations. Literally thousands of acres.
I encountered dozens of Vervet Monkeys at the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in northeastern South Africa, many of them were aggressively trying to get food from us.
We had a chance to visit a Cheetah rehabilitation center who’s goal is to care for orphaned Cheetahs, Serval Cats, African Wildcats and Caracal.
We completed our second photo safari yesterday and photographed wildlife in the morning light. It seemed like most of what we saw were giraffes.

One of my favorite hikes in the Big Bend NP is the hike up the Grapevine Hills Trail. T’s an easy 2.2-mile hike that leads to the Balanced Rock formation
My favorite hike in all of the park is the Lost Mine Trail hike. There are may Texas Wildflowers and geological formations along the route.
The Rio Grande serves as a border between the US and Mexico. You can access it throughout the park, however, this photograph was taken outside the park.
We usually stop at the “Ocotillo Fields” near the park entrance to photograph the sunset on our first day at the Park. The official road is Texas Highway 118 and it’s named “Panther Junction Road”.
The Glenn Springs area is filled with great history and it has a lot of possibilities for a great photograph. Unfortunately, the weather conditions have rarely cooperated.
I’m off to my annual spring trip to Big Bend and I thought I would share my top five landscape photos from my 2015 trips. This one merited an Honorable Mention.
I’m not a big fan of Blackbirds but I found this one interesting. I was out photographing birds at the Pedernales Falls State Park bird blind when I spotted a Red-winged Blackbird.

I was asked by members of the Dell Marketing team to lead a team of UT students who served as “Social Media Caddies” at the 2016 Dell PGA Match Play tournament.
I made this photograph by using my Neutral Density filters. By doing so, I was able to extend the shutter time to over one minute and capture the “silky water”.

I had never photographed an Osprey before and I can tell you that these birds don’t like to be photographed. At least not while the photographer is on a boat.

The City of Austin undertook an initiative to increase bicycle ridership in the metropolitan area. The Austin B-cycle system in the image is part of that plan.

Grackles are annoying birds. Austin is full of Grackles and they make a huge mess. Those of us that have lived here for a while stay away from them.

I encountered a moss-covered cliff while hiking Bull Creek park. The constant dripping had formed many moss “stalactites”. I called them “mossactites”.

Three Gossips is a mid-sized sandstone tower (about 350 feet at its tallest wall) sitting atop a roundish pedestal within the Courthouse Towers “cluster”
I planted a vine 9 years ago and each year the vine blooms with giant purple flowers. I never researched what I planted. It turns out it is a Clematis,
I thought it would be interesting to show what a Christmas light bulb looks like so I grabbed my camera and macro lens and captures this image from a bulb.

We had a chance to visit Boquillas Canyon during my trip to Big Bend NP. The Canyon is the easternmost of the 3 main narrows sections along the Rio Grande.
A friend and I went out to photograph ducks at the Pedernales Falls State Park duck pond. When we arrived, all the ducks flew away and the pond was empty.
The flower below, Havard’s fiddleleaf (Nama havardii) was one of the flowers that was new to my collection and is a rare plant as well.
I like shooting silhouettes, so, when I was shooting the sunrise at the Lost Mine Trail in BBNP, I decided this was a perfect opportunity for a silhouette.
This thorny plant was pointed out to me by a friend during our trip to BBNP. We completed our sunrise shoot and turned our attention to flowering plants.

I recently posted an image of a Black Crested Titmouse but I was able to capture a better image at the Pedernales Falls SP bird blind so I thought I would post it.
Common Ravens are observed throughout the Big Bend area. Of the birds classified as perching birds, the Common Raven is the largest, the size of a hawk.
I went back to the bird blind at the Pedernales Falls State Park and noticed this very nice Western Scrub Jay bathing in the pond at the bird blind.
I titled this one “Balanced Sunrise” because I was trying to make sure I got the rock formation and a good sunrise all at the same time. This is one of my favorite photos from my trip.
During a rip to the Big Bend National Park, I noticed this very interesting area near the park’s western entrance. We labeled it “The Badlands”.
This Ocotillo Sunset was taken in an “ocotillo field” that is located near the main entrance to the park on Highway 118 close to mile marker #21.
The Sotol plant is very prominent throughout the Big Bend NP. It was during a trip to the park that I photographed the now dead and empty stalk.
We normally associate fall colors with Maple, Oak, Cottonwood and Aspen trees but, we seldom associate desert plants with fall colors.
The BBNP is an amazing geological wonderland. There are many interesting rock formations impacted by Spheroidal Weathering along the Grapevine Hills Trail.
I was hiking the Lost Mine Trail in the Big Bend National Park the other day with some friends and I noticed this wonderful Gold Cobblestone Lichen.
I thought I would showcase another bird. The bird below is a female Golden-Fronted Woodpecker. These birds are very interesting creatures.
Bamboo is an amazing plant. It’s not only the largest member of the grass family but it is also the fastest growing plant in the world.

I purchased a set of Lee Neutral Density (ND) Filters earlier this year. I used them to extend the exposure time to create a smooth surf.

Mesa Arch is a “pothole arch” located within the Canyonlands National Park. It is located only a few hundred yards from the main road and it is one of the most photographed sites in the Moab area.
This is another golden sunset taken at the Green River Basin, located in the Canyonlands National Park, during my recent trip to Moab, UT.

I found a set of puddles during a trip to Moab, Utah, and decided they would make a great subject despite the fact that it was the middle of the day.

I had the opportunity to go the Enchanted Rock State Park to shoot an enchanted sunset. We scouted the area and decided to shoot the rock reflecting off of Moss Lake.
Feathers and butterflies are not usually associated in the same way that bikes and flowers are as well. Texas Gayfeathers are know for attracting butterflies.

This image was taken on the south bank of “Town Lake” (which is really a river) near the statute of one of our famous musicians, Stevie Ray Vaughn.
I was part of a photowalk in downtown Austin in the spring of 2012. Our first stop was the Long Center for the Performing Arts where we met a homeless man.

I found this beetle in my yard and brought him in to shoot. I named him “John” because John Lennon’s favorite color was green and he was a “Beatle” himself.
Well, it’s not really Rock-n-Rose but rather Rock Rose. This flower (Pavonia lasiopetala) is a native Texas Wildflower.
I think most everyone is aware that September 27th was a very special celestial day as the moon was putting on a very special show. A rare combination of a Total Lunar Eclipse and a “Blood Moon”.

The Spiny Hedge Hog is found throughout Texas. I found this specimen during my trip to Big Bend earlier this year. The stigma looks like fruit rollups.
I was hiking In Big Bend when I ran across this Engelmann’s Prickly Pear Cactus on the way to see Cattail Falls. I was fond of this little prickly baby bud.
Most great images are all about being in the right place at the right time. This image was taken when the praying mantis came between me and the sun. I really like how the light bounced off his body, especially the gleam in his eye.
On of my favorite Texas Wildflowers is the Mexican Hat. Not only do I think that the name is cool but so is the flower.
I’m sure the title “Soapy Asparagus” conjures up terrible childhood memories. The combination of soap and asparagus is not something any of us care to think about. But, those words are not what they seem.
The Santa Elena Canyon is another main attraction within the Big Bend NP. The canyon is part of the US/Mexico border and is home to the Rio Grand. This image captures the canyon’s first light.

Manaca Iznaga is an old plantation located outside of Trinidad, Cuba, in the Valle de los Ingenios area. Torre de Manaca Iznaga is located there.
Iglesia de San Francisco de Paula in Havana is no longer a church. One of Havana’s most attractive churches was fully restored in 2000. The stained glass windows, heavy cupola and baroque facade are distinctive architectural elements.
One thing that can be said about Cuban society is that they have an incredible ability to adapt. Cuba was highly dependent on the Soviet Union. This all came to an abrupt halt with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
While in Havana last year I had the opportunity to visit many museums and tourist sites. On the way back to the hotel one evening I decided to take a little detour through some of the streets in Havana.
During my recent trip to Buffalo I was able to visit the Buffalo Botanical Gardens in addition to visiting the Basilica. My favorite part of the tour was the cactus exhibit. I named this one Buffalo Cactus.

I visited Buffalo, NY earlier this year and had a chance to capture some images inside the Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawanna. I thought the “Congrats” balloon added a modern touch.

I noticed the bright, full moon one summer night in 2006. I recall the moon was as bright as I had seen in quite some time. So, I ran to get my camera, the longest lens I had and my sturdiest tripod.

The town of Ajo (Spanish for garlic) is located about 90 miles southwest of Phoenix. It is a quaint little town. As I drove through town I arrived at the town square where the bright whitewash structure immediately captured my attention.
