We spotted this bull bison last week along the Firehole River next to Highway 89 while transferring from the Old Faithful Lodge to the Mammoth Hot Springs area in Yellowstone National Park. As many Bull Bison do, he was alone looking for food. He was quite the specimen. One of the largest I have ever seen. Shortly after this photo was taken he went down to the Firehole River to continue his search.
Temperatures that morning were about minus 16 degrees Fahrenheit. It was bitter cold and you could tell that he hunkered down in the snow overnight but was still subject to the frost deposited by the geyser fog that blanketed the area overnight. Geyser fog is a term used by the locals to describe the temperature inversion effect that happens when the steam from the geysers cannot rise into the atmosphere as it normally does.
This image was taken with my Sony A7R IV using my Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 Lens with my 1.4x extender set on 400mm (560mm with extender). The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/8, shutter speed at 1/500th of a second, and the ISO set at 640. I hand-held the camera for this photo. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.
