Pier in the Fog

A fishing pier in the fog photographed along the Fulton Beach Road near Rockport Texas during my trip to the area last month. Many of the private fishing piers were damaged by Hurricane Harvey. I photographed this pier about six months prior to Harvey’s arrival on the Texas Gulf Coast later that summer. I was surprised that much of this structure was still standing.

Fishing piers along this stretch of the road offer an excellent opportunity for sunrise photographs. The heavy fog that morning prevented the desired sunrise colors from shining through, so a long exposure in the fog was the best way to take advantage of the early-morning photography opportunity. A little bit of work in post-processing helped bring some drama to this otherwise lifeless scene.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV using my Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 Lens set on 16 mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/14, shutter speed at 30 seconds and the ISO set at 100. I used a tripod for stability and my neutral density filters to lengthen the exposure. This is a single photograph processed using Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Nik Silver Efex Pro.
