One of the biggest attractions when visiting Yellowstone National Park is the Upper Geyser Basin and, specifically, Old Faithful. This famous geyser is one of the most photographed features in the park so I’m always looking for new angles. Water accumulates in an area near the geyser so I headed over there to photograph an Old Faithful reflection in the pool. I noticed some bison tracks in the pool and tried to use them as leading lines. I was pleased with the results and I plan on going back to that spot the next time I’m in the park.
Old Faithful eruptions can last anywhere from 1.5 to 5 minutes. On average, eruptions reach between 130 and 140 feet, although, it has measured over 180 feet high. Water at the vent has been measured as high as 203 degrees Fahrenheit. On average, this geyser will expel anywhere between 3,700 and 8,400 gallons of water. It is hard to imagine how the early settlers felt when they saw this magnificient geyser.
This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV using my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 Lens set on 50 mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set on f/18, shutter speed on 1/250th of a second and the ISO set at 100. I hand-held the camera for this image. This is a single image processed using Lightroom then finalized in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex.
