Another photograph of an American Bison in Yellowstone National Park. I photographed this amazing Bison yesterday along Highway 191, just north of the Grand Prismatic Spring. This Bison was part of one of the largest herds in the park. They were crossing the road and he was guarding the herd by standing between us and the rest of them. The park requires that you maintain a safe distance between us and the animal. The recommended distance is 25 feet. I’m not comfortable with that so I stand back and shoot with longer lenses. Many tourists have been injured trying to take selfies standing too close to these mighty animals.
American Bison are the largest land animals in North America. They are often miscategorized as Buffalo. Originally, bison were found primarily in the grasslands and prairie of North America. Today, bison distribution is greatly limited due to population decline and their movements are greatly regulated. Within the national parks, bison are found at all elevations.
This image was taken with my Canon EOS 7D Mark II using a Canon EF 600mm f/4 IS Mark III that I rented from LensRentals. What an amazing lens. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/4, shutter speed at 1/500th of a second and the ISO set at 500. I hand-held the camera for this image. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.
