Eastern Phoebe

Springtime is by far my favorite time of year, especially here in Texas. The temperatures are pleasant, the flowers start blooming and the songbirds are a plenty. Eastern Phoebes are perennial around our property and I’m always excited to see them milling about. They are wonderful birds and they usually nest near the garage. I was out trying to photograph birds in the front yard when this Eastern Phoebe decided to pose in the tree just in front of me. I was able to capture a few frames before he got nervous and left.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 7D Mark II using my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 II Lens set on 400 mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/5.6, shutter speed at 1/1250th of a second and the ISO set at 1000. I hand-held the camera for this image. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.

  1. I have a soft spot for photographs of birds. Great capture of this little phoebe, Terry. I’ve always thought they looked very soft compared to some birds. You’ve very fortunate to have them nesting near you. I hope you have lots of future opportunities to watch and photograph them! By the way, I love the background and how you lined up the different tones with the shape of the branch, putting the bird in the brighter section. Nice!
