Prairie Fleabane

Spring is moving along much faster than I expected. Wildflowers are springing up everywhere! I decided that I better get outside and make sure I still remember how to photograph Texas Wildflowers. Kneeling and squatting is no longer as easy as it used to be due to two knee surgeries so I had to find a way to photograph flowers that are close to the ground without hurting myself. A friend of mine made me aware of a very portable seat made by Walkstool, a Swedish company which allows me to sit versus kneel. So, I bought one and it is great. I also had to change the camera that I use to one with an adjustable screen. I had to make a few dry runs before my next Texas Wildflower photo shoot. The Prairie Fleabane pair was a good candidate for this test. Check out my Instagram feed to see this new setup.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 6D Mark II using my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro Lens. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/8, shutter speed at 1/20th of a second and the ISO set at 100. I used a tripod for stability and my Kirk Focusing Rail to obtain 9 images which I brought together into one image using Photoshop and the focus stacking technique. I then finalized the image in Photoshop.

  1. I love my Walkstool! I raved about it so much my father and brother each bought one, as well. Very sturdy. I also picked up a new camera with an adjustable screen in the past year, another great feature. Both definitely make creating these sorts of images easier. And, of course, a tripod without a center column helps get down low. I haven’t gone looking for wildflowers yet… I really need to, see what we have. Unfortunately, my favorite park for that is still closed after a really strong wind storm did a lot of damage in the park. I hope to get back in there shortly after they re-open.

    1. Great to find another happy customer. I ended up with three of them, all different lengths. I have to remember to add it to my photography packing list so I don’t forget it! :)
