Photography Painting

I have always wanted to paint on canvas but I realized long ago that my artistic talents don’t include painting or drawing. Sometimes I see a photograph and I wish I could paint it. Thankfully, technology allows us to do “Photography Painting” where we can take a photograph, and using software can create a painting.  This is what I did with a photograph of an American Bison that I photographed in Yellowstone last month. I used Topaz Impression to give it the painting an impressionistic look.

I created a slider so you can see the normal photograph compared to the “Photography Painting.” You can access the slider by clicking here.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 7D Mark II using my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 II Lens set on 400mm. The camera was set on Aperture Priority mode with the aperture set at f/5.6, shutter speed at 1/40th of a second and the ISO set at 400. I hand-held the camera for this image. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Topaz Impression to achieve the painting effect.

  1. It’s fascinating what can be done these days with software. But starting out with a great source photo does help! :-) Nice work, Terry. I like the subtlety of the Topaz effects. It’s fun experimenting with these sorts of things. One of these days I want to try hand coloring a black & white photo, maybe an infrared image. So many possibilities when creating art is the objective.

    1. Hi Todd. Thanks. Yes, fascinating indeed. You are right a good base photo is a must. I love playing with Topaz. It’s a great piece of software and the creators have done a good job with the presets. I don’t usually use the presets but I do in Topaz Impression. I like your hand-coloring idea. Let me know how that goes.
