Curious Coyote

I was setting up to photograph Old Faithful one of the mornings during my trip to Yellowstone National Park when I turned around and spotted this curious coyote making his way through the grounds. He did not seem bothered one bit by the presence of humans and strolled casually by. I was able to take quite a few photographs of him. This back-lit one with the snowflakes is one of my favorites.

Coyotes are notoriously smart and adaptable. The are found throughout North America and are thriving in major urban areas as well as in remote wilderness.  The coyote is a common predator in Greater Yellowstone, often seen traveling through open meadows and valleys, and in this case, through a populated area.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 7D Mark II using my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 II Lens set on 360 mm. The camera was set on Aperture Priority mode with the aperture set at f/9, shutter speed at 1/1000th of a second and the ISO set at 1600. I hand-held the camera for this image. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.

  1. I like this one, Terry. The sun created a beautiful rim light on the coyote, almost as if you were in the studio. :-) And the back-lit snowflakes really help make the shot. Nice one!
