A panorama of American Bison grazing along the Opalescent Pool in the Black Sand Basin area of the Upper Geyser Basin within the Yellowstone National Park. This is one of my favorite photographs of the area.
The Opalescent Pool is one of the few colorful pools within the Black Sand Basin. It is also one of the cooler pools with temperatures about 145 degrees. The pool is about six feet deep at it’s deepest point and it measures 28 feet wide and 55 feet long. The hot water has killed off most of the Lodge Pole Pines. The dead trees, combined with the colors of the pool and the chalky white color around the base of the trees makes for great photography. The American Bison are a bonus!
This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV using my Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 Lens set on 30mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/14, shutter speed at 1/50th of a second and the ISO set at 100. I used a tripod for stability. This is a series of five images merged together in Lightroom using the Panorama feature and then finalized in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.
