Cow Elk

A Cow Elk photographed in the Phantom Lake Area along the Grand Loop Road in Yellowstone National Park. There were quite a few Cow Elk crossing the road that day in search of food.

Phantom Lake is located about 10 miles east of Mammoth Springs and it is a great spot to view wildlife. A large group of Elk Cows with their young were descending the mountainside South of the road and crossing Phantom Lake before going up the hill on the north side. I waited patiently as each Cow Elk crossed in front of me for one to look my way. This one finally did.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 7D Mark II using my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 II Lens set on 400 mm. The camera was set on Aperture Priority mode with the aperture set at f/5.6, shutter speed at 1/1000th of a second and the ISO set at 800. I used a tripod for support. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.

  1. Beautifully composed. I like the snow line and the grass that add to the composition. The post processing, as usual, is perfect.
