Prickly Pear Sunset

I captured this prickly pear sunset during my first evening in Big Bend during my recent trip to the park. We are always eager to photograph as soon as we get there but our energy levels are a bit low following the eight hour car ride from Austin to West Texas. So, we usually pick a spot about a mile or two into the park to photograph the sunset. We call this the “Ocotillo Field” because Ocotillos are prominent in the area. It’s an especially good area when the Ocotillos are blooming. Since the Ocotillos were dormant I chose this prickly pear as my foreground. What you don’t see is that there a steep dropoff right behind me, so, space was at a premium…

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5DS using my Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 Lens set on 16 mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/11, shutter speed at 1/30th of a second and the ISO set at 100. I used a tripod for stability. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.
