Luminations

Every year, about this time, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas, puts on a show called Luminations. Everyone is invited and it’s a great family event. This year it takes place from December 7th through the 11th. Attendees are encouraged to walk along the paths and gardens with thousands of luminarias and other beautiful light displays. There are food trailers and musicians to celebrate the holidays.

A member of our informal photography group with connections to the Center invited us to donate our time and photographs to the Wildflower Center in order to help market the event. The Center set aside some time in advance of the event for us to come out and photograph their luminarias. This photograph below is one of my favorites from that night. If you are in the area, I highly recommend attending this event.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV using my Canon 16-35mm f/4L Lens set on 24 mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/10, shutter speed at 20 seconds and the ISO set at 1600. I used a tripod for stability. This is a composite photograph using two images. One for the overall scene and another for the ground-level lights. This was done to allow me to capture the stars while maintaining good exposure on the ground lights. Initial processing was done in Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.
