Greater Roadrunner

In preparation for my next photography trip, I decided to finish processing some of the photos that I captured this year in order to make more room on my drive. I still have a few unprocessed photos from my trips this summer. One of them is a photo of this Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) that I photographed while downloading and processing photos in my cabin during my last trip to Big Bend National Park. I was looking out the window and spotted the Roadrunner hunting lizards. Ideally, I would have liked for it have a lizard in his beak and his crest extended but it was not to be. I waited for a long time and it finally gave up the hunt and sped off into the desert.

Big Bend is a great place for Great Roadrunners. I see them all the time, especially in the mid-morning. They cross the road constantly and I’m always afraid I’m going to hit one with my vehicle. Fortunately, I have not done so. Beep-beep!

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 7D Mark II using my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 II Lens set on 400mm. The camera was set on Aperture Priority mode with the aperture set at f/8, shutter speed at 1/500th of a second and the ISO set at 400. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and finalized in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.
