One of my favorite locations in Ireland is Valentia Island. The island is home to the Valentia Island Lighthouse which I had the opportunity to visit during my trip. I ran across a standing stone on the lighthouse grounds. I read or heard about the standing stones prior to visiting the island so it was nice to see one up close.
It is estimated that Ireland has as many as 10,000 standing stones (also known as Menhirs). Most of the stones date back 2,000 years or more. Not all stones are ancient. Some were erected during the Christian period and are often decorated with Christian symbols. This one looks more ancient. There is probably a connection between stone circles and standing stones. I am sure there are many archeological studies with many opinions on the stone’s purpose. I was not able to find a common theory or point of view.
