I posted the top view if the Rainbow Cactus yesterday. This view shows you the colorful bands of spines that are the reason for the Rainbow Cactus’ name. This is probably the best specimen of this species I have ever seen.
Rainbow Cacti are primarily found on rocky slopes of arid mountains, on the desert floor, or in desert grasslands. They are distributed throughout Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. It occurs in every county of Texas’s Trans-Pecos region except for Val Verde. Texas rainbow cactus can also be spotted as far south as northern Mexico.
This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5DS using my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro Lens. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/8, shutter speed at 1/250th of a second and the ISO set at 100. I used a tripod for stability and my Kirk Focusing Rail to obtain 10 images which I brought together into one image using Photoshop and the focus stacking technique. I then finalized the image in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.
