I had the opportunity to visit Port Aransas, Texas during my recent trip to Rockport. Port Aransas is located about 20 miles south of Rockport. It’s a short drive which includes a ride across the channel on a ferry. I was traveling on my Harley Trike and the ride on the ferry was a great experience. When the ferry landed I made my way to the Port Aransas Nature Preserve and then onto the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center where I spent about an hour photographing birds along the raised boardwalk. One of the birds I came across was a Pied-billed Grebe. At first I though it was a baby but in fact it was an adult.
Pied-billed Grebes are fairly poor fliers and typically stay on the water. They can trap water in their feathers, giving them great control over their buoyancy. They can sink deeply or stay just at or below the surface, exposing as much or as little of the body as they wish. I watched this one go under water repeatedly to fetch food.
This image was taken with my Canon EOS 7D Mark II using my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 II Lens set on 200mm. The camera was set on Aperture Priority mode with the aperture set at f/8, shutter speed at 1/320th of a second and the ISO set at 250. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and finalized in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.
