Captain Chen II

This photograph of the “Captain Chen II” was taken near Fulton Harbor in the Rockport, TX area during my trip there last week. I was out scouting locations when the white boat caught my eye. I came back that evening to photograph it. As you can probably see by the color of the clouds, the sunset that day was spectacular. The scene is facing East so I gave up an opportunity to shoot into the sun for this scene. The winds were a little high so I used my new Syrp Variable Neutral Density filter to obtain longer exposures and flatten out the waves. This also allowed for a smoother reflection of the pink and red in the clouds. The bonus was the rising full moon which is featureless due to the long exposure.

Captain Chen was very curious as to why I was photographing his boat. We struck up a short conversation about his boat and fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. His family has lived in the area for a long time and he’s been operating a boat most of his life. I told him that his boat was going to be on the internet and he seemed very pleased to know that.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5DS using my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II Lens set on 31 mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/8, shutter speed at five seconds and the ISO set at 100. I used a tripod for stability and my Syrp Variable Neutral Density filter for a longer exposure. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and completed in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.
