Penguin Braying

This is another African Penguin photograph taken near Simon’s Town, South Africa during my trip to that great country last May. One of the things I noticed as I moved about the colony was the way they communicate. I photographed this Penguin braying while I was walking down the boardwalk near their nesting area. Many local residents liken this braying activity to a jackass. In fact, many local residents call them Jackass Penguins as a result as their sound is similar to the sound a jackass makes. It was both comical and interesting to observe this behavior. Many researchers have tried to identify their communication sounds and have successfully categorized many of their sounds into specific categories such as warning, mating and locating.
